Fern is our resident strong willed girl, who is a mix between Scottish Highland and Black Angus. She was rescued from a backyard beef farm, where the farmers didn’t want her because she doesn’t have horns. She gets her lack of horns from her black angus heritage, as no black angus has horns. Not having horns is the dominant trait, so naturally when one side of the parentage is hornless, the baby won’t have horns either. We guess the farmers must’ve missed that day in biology class. But don’t let Fern’s lack of horns fool you, she certainly holds her own in headbutt play sessions against her horned friends. There are many times when we will look out and see her playing with Uhtred and Sihtric, and although she is a bit shorter than them and has no horns, she looks like she has the upper hand on them when they get going. Fern has a very strong personality. When she sees the brush come out, she immediately comes over and demands to be groomed. She also has a very strong maternal or protective instinct. She immediately took a liking to Arwen, and the two have been quite inseparable ever since Arwen joined the herd. They have a lovely bond together, as two of the matriarchs of the herd.
