Arwen is our oldest and sweetest resident, coming to us at the age of 13 with her beloved son Alfred. After the heartbreaking loss of Alfred, Arwen was inconsolable and spent weeks mourning, often isolating herself from the herd. In an effort to lift her spirits, we rescued a calf named Aethelred for her to potentially “adopt.” Their bond was immediate and strong, and Arwen’s maternal instincts kicked in. She now keeps Aethelred within her line of sight at all times, and since then, Arwen has become more social with the herd. She has assumed a “retired queen” status, spending her days lounging in the sun on the hills of the pasture and enjoying being groomed by Aethelred and Marigold. Arwen’s resilience and strength make her a true queen of the sanctuary.
