Schoharie Creek Sanctuary rescues farmed animals and creates connections with humans to spread awareness that they are sentient beings, while also providing education surrounding the harmful impacts of animal agriculture, to further promote veganism.
Our story starts in the spring of 2021, when we purchased a home with a barn and some land, with the simple intent to rescue a couple cows, maybe a couple sheep, and know we had saved them from becoming victims of the industrial food system. We wanted to create a place where animals could live safely, be loved, and grow old without fear. It started when we rescued two highland calves, Uhtred and Sihtric, from an overcrowded backyard farm. They were our first residents, and the ones who showed us just how much a second chance can change a life.
Since then, our herd has grown. Marigold, Sheba, Fern, and so many others joined them, each with their own story and their own personality. What began as just a couple of rescues has grown into a sanctuary that now cares for over 70 residents, including cows, sheep, ducks, turkeys, cats, dogs, and one very happy pig who thinks he’s a cow.
Our sanctuary is more than barns and pastures. It is a promise. Every fence we build, every shelter we repair, every project we take on is about making sure these souls will be cared for not just today but for the rest of their lives.
Our work isn’t only about rescue. It’s about education and showing the world that animals are not things, they are someone. We want people to see their sentience, their personalities, their joy, and their friendships. We believe a better world is possible.
We can’t do this without support. Every donation, every share, every bit of encouragement helps us keep that promise we made in 2021: to give animals the lives they deserve.
We are truly grateful for all of the support that allows us to continue our work and giving our residents the best possible lives. Thank you all.
